melika-elenaOnce again, I think this says something about the writers and writing this season since a lot of viewers have seemingly no empathy/deep understanding for Hannah Green’s motivations (I think it’s mostly the writers’ fault, but not entirely). I’m trying not to descend into English Major Condescension Mode, but like… Christopher’s analysis is GREAT, but is it just me or should viewers have already thought about this??
I think Hannah Green is a pretty sketch character, and I don’t like her at all, but is it really that difficult to put yourself in her shoes, in Monty’s shoes? Monty was clearly devastated when he heard of his father’s death and was so happy to see his mom, which indicates he loves his parents and they clearly love him. Monty and Hannah’s relationship clearly isn’t like Raven’s neglectful mother or Bellamy and Octavia’s absent father(s).
What would you do, if you had been surviving on your own for so long, thinking you were alone, and not only do you find your mother again, but find out that your father had been brutally murdered? We’d all like to think that we would be “strong enough” or whatever, to go on independently, but the truth is, you would probably, at least for a little while, depend upon your parent(s) again, at least emotionally. Even Clarke, for as ‘strong’ as she is, looked to Abby for reassurance at the end of last season.
Like Clarke and Bellamy, Monty is a clear example of a character who Went Through Some Shit at Mt. Weather and is letting someone else take the reins because he’s fucking tired of making hard choices (you could argue that most, if not all, of the kids are doing this to some degree– Clarke with Lexa; Bellamy with Pike; Monty with Hannah; Jasper with alcohol; Raven with ALIE; even Miller, Octavia, and Harper with Kane, to some degree) and unfortunately, Monty put his faith and trust in someone who he loves, but is ultimately doing some shady shit.
I digress: I know that this is a show people watch for fun. You might not think about this show that is for pure entertainment too hard, but if people are seriously unable to understand/get right off the bat what people like Pike and Hannah Green’s motivations are, that’s a combination of some pretty shitty writing and some pretty shallow viewing, tbh.
